[PCR-1000] PCR1000BUR1v2 Explanation?

Saw an article on the EEPROM values and the averages of a slew of PCR's, and the comment that the xtal frequency setting was the one that had the widest variance.  So has anyone that applied the averaging option found any negative effect?  I am curious why several (3 I think) entries would be out of the average on a radio that appears to work just fine.
