As mentioned previously, I also use Windows XP pro (service pack 2
applied). I have not had any issues with
TALKPCR (Version 2.4F2) that were attributed to operating system
incompatibilities.
I have no un-resolved issues with the software (It is working great).

My machine came with only 1 serial port. I am preparing to add a second
serial device. I needed a second
port. Of course my options were a USB to Serial converter OR to purchase a
PCI serial card. I chose the later
and have just installed a serial card with two more ports. (total cost
w/shipping from ebay $7.00).
I have moved the PCR over to the new card and tested, it works great.

There are a couple of reasons I chose the serial card. (even though USB
certainly has it desirable features)
  1. TALKPCR web site discusses that some USB to Serial converters have a
compatibility problem.
I didn't want to risk that problem with other PCR programs
  2. I am going to purchase PROBE1K in the coming months. As you may know.
it is a dos based program and can directly access
the serial port for higher scan rates (or so I've read). This
probably won't work with USB to Serial converters.

Since I am not experiencing any apparent compatibility issues with Win XP
pro (SP2) and TALKPCR. I would suggest that you
get service pack 2 from Microsoft (free).

Alternatively you might try this: right clicking on TALKPCRs icon and
select properties from the drop down list, select compatibility tab at the
top of the
dialog box that opened. Select the check box "run this program in
compatibility more for:" , Using the drop down list select windows 98 and
press OK. If there is no change in device or program behavior you can easily
return to this dialog box and un-check the box.

BTW. What kind of issues are you having that makes you suspect operating
system incompatibility?
