Many people like Red Hat, though I've heard that the default
settings following installation make it non-secure.  I use Red Hat.

Many people like Suse.  I've heard it is more "secure."

Many people like Debian.

This is my current intention.  I am again using a Mac,
this time a PowerMac G4 running OS X (10.2) and I 
love it, but I have not yet started using it for amateur 
radio purposes (soon I hope).  It is a 500 MHz G4 with
448Mb RAM and a nice flat 17" CRT display.  Didn't
cost an arm and leg either.

I have had decent success with Windows 2000 Pro on my dual 300 MHz PII.

I have avoided XP.

I have an inexpensive router for my cable connection.  I use the Mac, PC,
Linux boxes etc all online.

Personally, I'm becoming an Apple fan again for commercial software.
Trouble is (of course) there is more software available for M$ Windows.

For the $$$, of course, can't beat Linux (free).  But I like using Photoshop,
Dreamweaver, etc.  I can do that on the Mac and have access to Unix.

Any pointers to good OS X Mac software appreciated.
