While the some of the EEPROM data is unique to that radio (from the
factory's automatic alignment process), some users have been able to restore
their radio to some semblance of operation by reloading an eeprom file from
another radio that is very close in serial number.  Component values do
vary, hence the need for factory alignment.

Another reason to use the file from a nearby serial number (if you did not
have a backup of yours) is to account for any manufacturing changes ICOM may
have made.  These are usually invisible externally.

Some of these changes involve minor circuit changes, changes in the
manufacturing process, bug fixes, and component substitutions.  This last
item is troublesome to all high-tech equipment makers.  Component suppliers
frequently stop making a particular part (or change it) due to low volumes,
loss of a critical sub-component, or chemical, etc.
