  you're  welcome  and right: to each his own. I guess you're using the MFJ in a
  base  configuration; I travel extensively and possibly this led me to the less
  bulky software approach.

  I forgot to mention another piece of software that could give an answer to the
  original  question  in  this thread: RadioRaft by F6FLT (shareware) can decode
  some 30 digimodes including exotic stuff like ARQ, FEC, etc. and has an "auto"
  option  letting  the  soft  self-tuning the appropriate mode, shift, speed and
  other  parameters.  It is much cheaper than, say, Code3Gold or other stuff. It
  runs  under  DOS  (I  get  it running in a DOS window under W98SE, newer WinOS
  could  have  sove  problem).  As  it  uses  a  commport,  it  needs  a  simple
  analog-digital  interface  (a schematic is included with the software). By the
  way,  a  wonderful, cheap interface is sold in kit by KK7UQ; in addition, very
  detailed  plans for homemade construction and various infos are available in a
  PDF file on his website: www.waypoint.com/users/~discobay . It is intended for
  RTX, obviously one can use the RX part only.
