[PaQSO] Logging Dupes

Funny you should mention that Bud.

One year, quite a few years ago (I was still WN3VAW then), I had a late
start to the 'test (if you knew my ex, then no further explanation is
necessary, if you didn't, well, just go with the flow) and didn't get to
Greene County until 4-ish.

Third or fourth station I called was an 8 who insisted that I had to be a
dupe, the software said so, and that was that! As we ALL know, the software
is NEVER wrong.

I didn't waste much time arguing, just moved on. But I didn't appreciate
the on-air dressing down.

About a half hour or so later, I'd found a frequency, working a small pile
up and low and behold, who calls me? Seems that there was a little, ah, bug
in his software... it flagged all WN3 2x3's as dupes. Because there was no
way you'd ever work a WN3 2x3 on 40 SSB, right?

I hate to admit it... but considering how I'd just been chewed out on the
air, I had to tell Mr. My Software Doesn't Make Mistakes something on the
lines of "sorry, you told me that we were a dupe, and you insisted that you
don't make mistakes."

And, I after I made him sweat a little, I did go ahead and work him.

Typical problem in contesting is that Station A thinks he has worked Station
B, while Station B thinks he has not worked Station A. It happens
frequently with similar calls. When KY3D and I both operated PAQP we had
that problem too often.

I recall one time, after just getting into the contest late Saturday
afternoon, I was told that I was a "Dupe" on my SECOND attempted QSO. The
other station kept arguing that I had given him #243 ERI an hour before, and
he would not work me as I tried to give him #2 NHA. (Obviously he had
logged KY3D as K3YD.)

My practice, like some others in this group, is to log them all and let the
computer handle the scoring. With computer logging, the duplicate will
clearly stand out as a 0-point QSO.

the
1MM manual about why you MUST log dupes. If its good for him its good for
the
est of us. I have been working dupes since I read this over 8 years ago.
I certainly respect Dave and his opinions a lot, but he doesn't set the
metric
or us.
And yes, if a person logs dupes, and sends that log in, the main thing it
does
s make more work for the log checkers.

My personal experience is that I hear too many running stations waste
time trying to explain the dupe. In that amount of time they could have
easily
orked two or three more stations with one of them probably being me. That
would
et me move on to the next QSO. The ones that are working dupes never break
tride and just may have eliminated a logging penalty.
There are certainly two or more sides to every issue. Certainly it can be an

nconvenience to wait to QSO with someone. But it can also be an
inconvenience
o sift through duplicate contacts. Fortunately there really aren't that many

ince the ascendancy of computerized logging.
My own personal method of dealing with dupes is to tell the person they are
a
upe, and move on. I don't need to explain anything.
I use N1MM at home and WB3W while mobile. It doesn't allow me to log dupes,
so
hat kind of makes it a nuisance to have to log them.
