Herb; yes any TNC can digipeat and the fact aprs doesn't use connects,
digpeating is very import to aprs. As I understand it for aprs operation
it's the alias' that determine the working of the network. I believe the use
of "wide" as an alias should be reserved for those stations that truly have
a wide area of coverage and "rely is recommended for home stations.
FROM digis.txt;
"WIDE DIGIPEATING: ALthough in start-up areas any TNC can be used as a
WIDE digi simply by setting its MYALIAS to WIDE and its BText to include
its APRS position, this is NOT recommended today in areas within a mature
APRS environment. Today, only TNC's with the new PacComm 4.0 and
Kantronics 8.2 Roms or later should be used. They should be set up with
the four generic calls of RELAY, WIDE, TRACE and your state abbreviation,
SS. The functions of each of these generic aliases are as follows:
RELAY - The universal default for all APRS stations
WIDE - Provides WIDE area digipeating
TRACE - Identical to WIDE, but because only the TRACE Capable
DIgipeaters have TRACE, then it is a safe way of
setting a path that will only use these new digis.
SS - Useful for state wide only digipeating
HOME STATIONS should never set their MYALIAS to anything other than RELAY
without the full consent of the surrounding users and network planners.
APRS users must be able to assume that they can use anyone's station as
a RELAY digi."
Herb; my guess the reason you can't be found on findu is because your signal
aren't being heard by an internet gateway. PLEASE keep in mind I'm a rank
amateur at this myself. To date my aprs activity consisted of receiving
position reports of balloons launched from the Manhattan or Salina KS area
and the occasional weather broadcast. The only thing my home station now
hears is PCSAT-11;
cmd:PCSAT-11>BEACON,SGATE:
T#919,052,058,082,052,212,00111111,0110,1
PCSAT-11>APRS3:
:BLN3PCSAT:www.ew.usna.edu/pcsat for details of operating
PCSAT-11>APRS2:
:BLN2PCSAT:Other easy uplink APRS sats are ISS & UO-22.

Subject: [Packet] APRS and Digi's
: G'Morning All --
:
: Not sure, firstly, if I should be posting to the Packet Forum
: here rather than the APRS forum...
:
: Let's see if I can ask this question properly <grin>...
:
: Seems I've heard someone say that ANY operating APRS
: configured station can be configured to automatically be
: a "relay" station for another in the propagation area rather
: than having to depend on a "Digi" as described in our days
: of Packet Radio -- True or not?
:
: Question number two -- what am I doing wrong, or, at least,
: not doing properly with my station, using APRS-PlusSA,
: as my signals are NOT being seen by the FindU Server as
: is evident for Nedra and Allan in this URL:
:
:
: It formerly worked well as in our vacation trip from Missouri
: to California and Oregon in April of 2001.
:
: Just has to be something I'm not setting up properly; need
: to have a hint as to what it might be.
:
: Thanx! Herb W0AFY in SW Missouri
