Started with an S-38 and the single 6AG7 one tube xmtr. Improved rcvr to a
command set for 80, and a Lafayette HE-10 (by Trio, now Kenwood. Looked like
S-38 but worked much better) for 40. The 2 watts input never got me enough
code practice to get a General, so I ended up on 2 meters with a Twoer, A
Novice Rig if there ever was one. Back when they allowed Tech's back on low
bands, I used a Ranger I and an Atlas 110 receiver, a station that actually
worked!
BTW, in my area, North Jersey, there was a Novice transmitter that was very
popular because it was CHEAP. A close out. The Globe HG-303. Full Novice
power for only $25 in like 1965. Anyone have any experience with one? I
never did get one as I was a tech at the time with no Low Band
privileges.--Mike WV2ZOW
