If he has a voltage-tunable Gunnplexer it is possible to use it for
narrow modes. Glenn Elmore N6GN wrote a series of articles in Ham
Radio years ago about how to phase-lock a Gunnplexer and use it in a
transverter. The article is on the web:

I actually built this.
I would use some different parts and circuits these days, as more
modern components and technology have made it easier to build some of
the circuits. But the basic idea of how to phase-lock the Gunplexer
and use it in a transverter can be seen there.
