Managed to catch the short E open on Sunday morning to the FN41 area ....
not a large scale opening but good signals from a small area and always fun to
catch ANY propagation. Hat's off to Bruce as KB9C/R for braving the elements
.... made the grade with him from most of his stops on 2, 222, and 432, but
it was hit & miss on 902 and 1296. Never did complete a 2304 Q with him.
Glen, KC0IYT/R, got out Sunday and provided some much needed multipliers from
EN35 on 902 and up. Big thanks to both guys.

My 5.7 and 10 GHz contacts were made with W0GHZ and KC0IYT/R with my
portable system from my driveway or garage. W0GHZ (EN34lx) is only 17 miles from me
(EN34it), but it is an all tree path. 10 GHz was on snow scatter, but 5760
was pretty much brute force direct path with pure tone CW. Glen was portable
across the river from me in EN34, probably not much more than five miles or
so, but on the other side of my house from me as my garage door points north.
Glen and I were able to work on 10 GHz, but not 5760. Later in the day Glen
moved up to EN35ja, or 15 miles north of me. Once again we were able to use
snow scatter to make it on 10 GHz. When Glen went to work Gary on 5760
using the bounce off of downtown, I heard Glen 5x1 on CW and we went on to work
each other. I was aimed on the direct path to Glen, but the signals peaked
while pointing just at the top of the trees, perhaps 10 degrees up .... any
more or any less elevation and he drop out. After looking at the picture that
Glen sent to me as to his set up its pretty amazing that we made the Q over
this path.

Other than that, a typical January contest. Lots of QSB. Best DX was over
to K8EB in EN73. Signals would float up out of the noise, be there for a
minute, then gone forever. Disappointed that there wasn't more UHF & uW
activity this time around, but it was fun to make what Q's there were to make.

Don't forget to send in your log and don't forget to indicate Northern
Lights Radio Society as your club.

73, Jon
