That sounds like an interesting experiment.  I have an RC Electroncs "Whatt's
Up" meter that gives me voltage, current, minimum voltage, maximum current,
watts used and amp-hours used.  I connected this meter directly between my
Astron SS-30 and Yaesu FT-857 for this test.

I power cycled the radio three times, and the maximum current was .65A, with
a receive current draw of .63A.
