I am looking for recommendations for antennas for Rovers. I like the stuff
from Bill Olsen for the lower bands, but he does not do 33cm and
Hi Joe. You didn't say what band(s). Generally speaking, most rovers use
yagis on 432 and down, loop yagis on 902 to 3456, and dishes above 5760.
Yagis work well on 902 and 1296 too, and the VJB Cheap Yagi designs are good,
but above 1296 dimensions get critical and loopers are a bit more forgiving to
manufacturer. Directive Systems is the place for loop yagis. For boom
length, each to their own ! When roving I find that 5 to 6' boom lengths
offer a good amount of gain with reduced aiming needs ... my rover antennas are
fixed so I have to turn the car. Also, sometimes its not easy to get the
rovermobile flat - remember those beam patterns are both in azimuth and elevation
and if you have a tight beam pattern that is pointed into the ground, or
space, all that gain is for naught. Other rovers will tell you that you need
the longest booms you can fit on your rover ... that works too, just remember
aiming.
