What an amazing contest. John and I had a great time. We spent the first 4
hours of the contest in Milwaukee and worked many locals there. We worked
K2YAZ on all bands across Lake Michigan from the waterfront in Milwaukee.
We tryed again from further inland but did not have a good shot across the
lake for the high bands. The 6 meter moxon worked good and we had several
150-170 mile ssb qso's with it. We had an encounter with some low hanging
trees that partially dis-assembled and damaged the 6 meter moxon, we were
able to put it back together but it never did work the same after that. We
got lost a couple of times in Milwaukee and by the time we got on the road
to western Wisconsin it was pretty late. We worked several contacts from
EN42 and EN43 near Dodgeville and then headed towards the Iowa border and
the hotel. Along the way we ran into KF0Q and some of the Eau Claire
stations and worked them from EN42. We got to the hotel about Midnight and
we were on the road by 7:00am The bands were pretty quiet Sunday morning.
We did manage to work some stations along the way to the Algona, IA grid
corner and we worked several Twin Cities stations from the corner as well as
working KM0T on all bands from all 4 corners. The highlight of the trip was
working W0GHZ on 2304 and 3456 while going north on I-35 at 70 MPH!! We had
a great time working from EN25, Howard Lake and I am sure I provided some
entertainment during the EN24 pileup on 2 meters.
A great time was had by all inside the W0AMT rover mobile. I am looking
forward to Rover Mania during the August UHF contest, none of those pesky 6
meter antennas to deal with.
Can't say enough good things about Roverlog for VHF logging software,
flawless operation. we use it for voice keying and it is integrated with
the GPS so we don't need to type in the current grid it just knows where we
are.
