Thanks, Steve.  Interesting. 

At least these, unlike the "Pringels can" antenna of a couple/three years back looks as if it would work.  WA5VJB measured several Pringels cans at CSVHF/Milwaukee: the BEST was -8dB gain.  The bare probe (i.e., no can) measured 0.5 dB!

The "scoop" here should be about 7 + 20*log10(Dia-in-wavelengths) dBi gain.
30 cm dia; 12.5 cm wavelength, so 7 + 20*log(30/12.5) = 7 + 7.6 = 14.6 dBi.  Close to what's being claimed.  (The ">12 db measured" statement is more realistic.)
