Hi John,
You're correct, and the references are good ones !  

However, I don't think it matters WHAT omni-antenna you use if no one can
hear you!  On 2m, you make up for lack of antenna with power, but that's
real hard (and expensive !) to do on 1296.  Even a WA5VJB home-built (10 el
on a 30" boom) will produce 12 or so dBi gain.  That takes your 10 watt IC
brick to 100-160 w ERIP.  The biggest advantage on antenna gain, though, is
that it ALSO works on receive.  

You CANNOT work as much on an omni- as you can with even a small gain
antenna!  This doeasn't seem to be a popular answer, but its the simple truth.
