Hi All.
It was fun to work Mike, KM0T, this morning. Thanks Mike.
Lenny, K0SHF, covered most of the information earlier.
I first heard Mike at about 7:17AM local time. Like Lenny said
we had just setup and aimed the antennas. I was tuning down from
what we usually call .100. I knew from the past operations with
him that he starts low and moves up in frequency.
I heard a signal that was about 8 kHz below "our" .100. It had
rapid QSB, but was s9 on peaks. Lenny said I had a birdy, but
about that time the signal went away. I called on CW a couple
of time but didn't get an answer. We waited for the sked to
begin.
We went back to".100", to start the sked. Mike was there right
away. This is where the drift comes in. He was about 8 kHz higher
than where I found him 15 minutes earlier. While we worked Mike
he didn't move more than the normal RIT range. I've also found
that to be pretty typical for just about everyone else. We all move
around.
The other interesting thing about the contact is that I didn't move the
antenna from the time I set up. I never peaked on Mike. Actually
I never had time, he was so strong and the contact was over before
I thought about peaking. 12 W on his end didn't hurt either.
Can we work Mike anytime? I hope so. He has been worked or
heard at the following date and times:
30 June 1315Z by K0KFC at Flying Cloud (Heard only)
13 July 1225Z worked by K0KFC and WA2VOI at Flying Cloud
14 July 1850Z worked by K0FQA at Monticello
20 July 1230Z worked by K0SHF and WB0LJC at Flying Cloud
During our contact weather conditions were listed as: Temp 75 degrees,
Dew point 73 degrees, Humidity 94%, Altimeter 29.90, Visibility 4 Mi.
Before I left home I checked the radar on Ch 17. I wasn't sure
we could make contact since there were scattered showers
in NW Iowa and an intense rain storm west of us. The leading
edge of the storm was in between us. There was some light drizzle
as we left the airport site. When we reached home, 20 minutes later,
there was a light rain. Another half hour later the rain was much more
intense. Our contact with Mike was short, but I didn't hear anything
that sounded like rain scatter.
We also need to try working Mike from Vasa again, Birkmose and
Mendota.
With this repeated success, how does it affect our cumulative
strategy?
Is anyone bringing their 10 GHz equipment to CSVHF? If so
would you like to set up a sked from Rib Mountain? I am willing
to go to either Monticello, Vasa or some other site. Let me know.
73, Gary WB0LJC
