Hi Chris,
I think you may be right, but.... (There's always a 'but'.)
Having to carry another radio, and a much larger antenna plus masting, is a
major problem. I have a 706 in the car, so that's not a problem, right ?
Well, no. Leaving it in the car is not always possible. Today, for me,
that would have been worse than useless. A 3 minute walk to the car to use
the liasion frequency, and a 4-5 minute walk back. NOT practical. At
least with FM, I can cross-band repeat with the 50mW handheld to the car,
and use the 50w XMTR to hit the repeater. Our problem today was that we
didn't use the correct frequency, not that FM didn't work. (Although its
obvious that simplex wouldn't have worked for any of the locations.) Also,
there's the problem of an antenna. A 5/8 wave vertical isn't going to work
for SSB at these distances any better than it does for FM simplex. Ditto
for a halo. (Yeah, I know. We've all worked halos at 150 - 200 miles.
>From home stations, with 150 - 200 watts and 14 element beams at 65'. Halo
to halo with 25 - 50W doesn't work that well.
BUT, we should try it anyway. The radio isn't that big, and a halo, etc.,
isn't than much to carry. The battery might be, though. (And I have to
fix the mounting so it can be removed with out a major effort.)
I would like to forward a "comment" originally made by Gary, WB0LJC.
Basically, we need to adopt methods that DON'T REQUIRE 2m liasion
frequencies. We're starting to do that... and we need to continue it. So
and so transmits for 2 minutes, listens for two minutes, etc. When you
hear each other, you DON'T call them on 2m to say, "I hear you," you make
the Q on the frequency you're using !!! If you DON'T hear them after an
agreed upon number of sequences, you call it quits and try something else.
No need for 2m at all.
Having said that, we still need SOME liasion... especially if you can't
make it to a location and get on the air on time, etc. But we're currently
using 2m as a crutch, and its costing us far to much time and effort.
*/ END SOAPBOX
Missed you today. Sorry you couldn't make it.
