If I had to venture to guess, low volunteer participation rate is a problem with all social, service, and special interest clubs. It seems to be an unfortunate constant across many organizations.
Just examples from my own personal life:
My whole path through Eagle Scout within my troop there were always very few of the adults of the many kids in the troop that were active leadership\volunteer participants. Same could be said of the various roles within the troop on behalf of the scouts themselves (quartermaster, patrol leader, etc.).
4-H was the same, it was very hard to get people to participate in the service-related work, or to hold the leadership roles within the club (president, secretary, treasurer, etc.).
I'm in an automobile enthusiast club in addition to the NJARC. Very few members actively participate in organizing the events, setting up the events, or are willing to hold offices despite a membership size similar in numbers to the NJARC, though attendance to our events is fairly good.
I'm sure there is a psychological or sociological reason as to why this occurs, but regardless of the cause, the result seems to be the same from club to club. The minority of an organization work very hard, put in more time and effort, and sacrifice more of their personal time to allow the majority to enjoy the organization and what it has to offer. We have a very hard working core group of volunteers in the club, in the museum, at IA, etc. Not only should their efforts be praised and credit gave where it's due, but it's important to be mindful of what they do, and how much they give, and to ask whether they can use more help. It's never too late to pitch in (more).
Matt
