Just checked http://www.njarc.org/clubprograms.html and the Broadcaster isn't listed as a membership benefit. The Tube, Resistor, Capacitor and Schematic programs are listed as membership benefits along with the Repair Clinic and this reflector.
The NJARC constitution will have to be modified if the Broadcaster is made free on the 'net since it says in Article IV, B-4 that the newsletter is a benefit to a member in good standing which is, of course, one who pays their dues. The NJARC Constitution should be looked at anyway since a lot has changed over the last 20 years or so.
Looking over some of the other items at http://www.njarc.org particularity the "History of NJARC Officers" under "Club Information", I see a lot of blanks. In an effort to add some information, here are the club officers from inception up to when I was elected.
According to the March, 1993, the first issue of the NJARC News, Volume 1, Number 1:President: Charles A. (Tony) FlanaganVice President: Michael HammerSecretary and Treasurer: Kathleen FlanaganTechnical Coordinator: Thomas ProvostSargent-at-Arms and Steward: Don CruseNewsletter Editor: David SicaTrustees: Mark Mittleman and Ludwell Sibley
This list was unchanged until Autumn, 1994 issue of NJARC News, Volume 2, Number 2 when Marv Beeferman became Sargent-At- Arms / Steward and was also named the Swapmeet Coordinator. Lud was also the guest editor for this issue.
The next issue of NJARC News (that I have) is Winter 1994-1995, Volume 3, Number 1. Everything is as above except that the Swapmeet Coordinator is now Jim Fisher.
The next issue (that I have) of NJARC News is Summer 1995, Volume 4, Number 1. Everything is as above except that the Swapmeet Coordinator position is now back to Marv Beeferman.
The next issue of the NJARC Newsletter was a change form the 8 1/2 by 5 1/2 inch format to the current 8 1/2 by 11 inch format. Fall 1995, Volume 1, Issue 1 is the first to use of the name "Broadcaster" on the newsletter masthead. Editor is now a new chap named Marv Beeferman. Hope he makes the grade!
The next list of NJARC Officers is in Broadcaster, Summer 1996, Volume 2 Issue 7.President: Jim WhartenbyVice President: Ludwell SibleySecretary: Marv BeefermanTreasurer: Gerald DowginSargent-At-Arms: Donald CruiseTrustee: Mark Mittleman
If there is interest, I can go through my Broadcaster collection and fill in more of the history. I hope that this information gets added to the History of NJARC Officers on the web page. It has taken me a few hours to go through this exercise!
On other issues of membership, this reflector currently has 258 members. Don't know how often this changes but I do remember a few people who have publicly resigned from the reflector over the years and the occasional post that says "new to the group" or some such phrase.
So another question to be answered is: how did you find this reflector if you are not an NJARC member?Jim

I have a feeling that this maybe a solution in search of a problem.
Perhaps it is time to survey new members and find out how they discovered NJARC and go from there. If I was to venture a guess, I think it would still be by word-of-mouth.
Out of curiosity, how many dues paying members does NJARC currently have? If memory serves me well, membership has always hovered around 400 give or take. Is this still the norm?
NJARC, in my mind, is an exceptional club. Most radio organizations I have had the pleasure to visit have nowhere near the membership or the variety of programs. The only club I have seen that comes anywhere near to the membership and breath of programs of NJARC is the Vintage Radio and Phonograph Society (VRPS) located in the Irving-Dallas-Fort Worth area of Texas.
Anyone have first hand knowledge of other similar sized clubs?
Jim

I GUESS IT ALL BOILS DOWN TO WHAT OUR GOAL IS. DOES KEEPING OUR BROADCASTER FREE ATTRACT NEW MEMBERS WITH ALL THE INFO IT GIVES, OR DO WE LIMIT THE CURRENT BROADCASTER TO DUES PAYING MEMBERS? IN VIEW OF THE FACT THAT BACK ISSUES ARE AVAILABLE FOR FREE ANYWAY, I STILL AM OF THE OPINION THAT EVERYONE SHOULD HAVE ACCESS TO OUR NEWSLETTER, MEMBER OR NOT. IT IS A FORM OF ADVERTISEMENT. TO OUR MEETINGS, PARSIPPANY SWAP MEETS, TAILGATE SWAP MEET, REPAIR CLINICS, REGULAR MONTHLY MEETINGS (WHICH ARE NOT LIMITED TO CLUB MEMBERS, AS A FEW GUESTS ARE ALWAYS INTRODUCED BY RICH EVERY MONTH). YES, SOME PEOPLE WILL GAME THE SYSTEM, NOT PAY DUES BUT AVAIL THEMSELVES OF OUR LARGESSE, BUT IT IS NO DIFFERENT THAN GOING TO CHURCH, OR ANY FREE EVENT, WHERE SOMETHING IS GIVEN, AND DONATIONS ARE THEN REQUESTED. SOME WILL GIVE, SOME WILL NOT. DO WE KEEP PEOPLE AWAY FROM A CHURCH SERVICE, OR ANY COMMUNITY EVENT, BASED ON THEIR COMMITMENT TO PAYING, I THINK NOT. UNTIL WE LIMIT OUR MEETINGS, REPAIR CLINICS, SWAP MEETS TO MEMBERS ONLY, WITH A MEMBERSHIP CHECK AT THE DOOR, WE ARE LIMITING OURSELVES TO GROWTH, AS THERE IS NO BETTER WAY TO ATTRACT NEW MEMBERS THAN BY SHOWING THE PERSPECTIVE NEW MEMBER ALL THE BENEFITS OF OUR CLUB. Rob,
The long standing theory is that we have a number of faithful NJARC members, some in remote locations, whose primary participation is reading the Broadcaster. I have personally done this in the past with other clubs, and remain a member of AWA. It's a little hard to judge the financial impact of freeing up the newsletter.
I vote don't fix it if it ain't broke.
Al

I THINK YOU ARE RIGHT JOHN. WHAT IS THE DOWNSIDE? NONE AS I SEE IT. THOSE THAT LIKE THE CLUB WILL GLADLY FORK OVER $25/YEAR FOR DUES. AND WHAT IS THE ENFORCEMENT FOR NON-PAYING MEMBERS? DOES ANYONE CHECK MEMBERSHIP AT OUR MONTHLY MEETINGS, WORKSHOPS, OR SWAP-MEETS? NO. SO LET THE WORLD SEE OUR BROADCASTER, LIKE ALL THE OTHER FREE POSTED VIDEOS. ROB

To all and the BoardNewsletters should be free and posted on the club web page to attract new members. If you want the club to grow, publicity works. And the newsletter is good publicity.--
