[NJARC] Newsletters should be free

Hi Guys,
When you mention successful clubs with fairly large memberships you have
another one right on your doorstep, The Mid-Atlantic Antique Radio Club
(MAARC). I just checked with the membership chair and they have 584.
Membership fluctuates, lose some, gain some and it had been in the area of
600 for a number of years. At one point is was about 800, but 600 ain't
bad. They publish a monthly journal (not a newsletter) called Radio Age
(formerly published by Don Patterson) and the yearly dues are $24. For that
you get a 16 page, illustrated (with good graphics) publication and access
to the technical library. While your newsletter is free, this one costs,
and the $24 does not cover the cost of the publication and mailing. So it
is subsidized and MAARC raises funds through auctions at their monthly
meetings, their annual convention (Radioactivity which is held in June -
this week) and the Fallfest in October. Anyone coming to RA? I must be nuts
as I am driving 600 miles and will get there on Thursday!
The thing that keeps the membership up is the Journal - were it not for that
the membership would probably be half. But it is a lot of work with three
editors handling four issues a year. So the key (as we have seen for US) is
monthly meetings with an auction, mini swap meet, presentation, and a really
good monthly pub which accounts for probably half the numbers. This format
works for MAARC, and each organization has something that works for them.
I'm sure some of the NJ club members are also members of MAARC, and the
reverse is true. I was a member of your club when I lived in Maryland and
remember Tony Flanagan very fondly, as well as a number of others.
It is a great hobby we share.
73s,
