The 27k resistor works much the same as a 500 ohm 20 watt resistor works in place of a loudspeaker field coil in a power supply circuit. Instead of an L-C filter you are creating an R-C filter. Determine the optimum resistance value by calculating the equivalent time constant. Or, use good old trial and error.
