Hi Lisa,
The other reason that the coil is not critical is that it is not part of a resonant circiut; it is a coupling circiut. The secondary winding on the other hand is resonant. If you were to take a few turns off or add a few  to the secondary,the sensitivity and tracking of the tuning circiuts would be messed up. 
It sure is tough to count the thin primary turns. I am pretty sure it was about 64 turns.
