Marty is right about the wire - it's very very thin.  I counted more than 50 turns within the 0.6" width.  The diameter of the coil is ~1.2", so there's more than 15' of wire on the primary.  

Is the number of turns "not that critical" because the gain from the coils is small relative to the gain from the tubes?  Any other reason?
