John,

Before you commit to spending money on rent, be careful that you can make
enough money to cover your costs. That may be harder than you think! You
might want to think about affiliating yourself with another vendor in the
beginning as the costs of setting up your own operation are going to eat
seriously into any profits you make. My advice would be to start slowly
and finance the business with the profits from the business. That way,
you can expand into a right-sized operation without finding yourself in
something that's too big and expensive to maintain. If you do well, you
can expand sooner and larger; if business is slow at first, you'll be
glad you aren't committed to covering a lot of expenses.

And be VERY careful of dealing with the sales tax folks. They are
ordinary people and I'm sure they're great to have over to a backyard
barbecue, but when they're on the job they have ABSOLUTELY no sense of
humor and no compassion. I recently received a notice from them that they
have come to the conclusion that I underpaid my sales tax IN THE YEAR
2000 and that I owed them thousands of dollars for nearly eight years of
interest and penalties on a couple of hundred dollar debt!!!
