Hi Rick,
Hopefully, your project is experimental rather than commercial: The LM3914 was discontinued by National in 1999, but you can still find them at surplus dealers.
Have you tried laying out a board with ExpressPCB (www.expresspcb.com)? It's really fun, and the free software lets you draw schematics and do the layout on a Windows PC.
