In addition to the anniversary of D-Day, this is also the anniversary of
the Battle of Midway in 1942, the battle that turned the tide of the war in
the Pacific in favor of the Allies.

In a message dated 6/6/2017 5:56:27 P.M. Eastern Daylight Time,
kd3ht at epix.net writes:

I think the attached graphic emphasizes the scale of the operation.
If one was to add the defensive forces and equipment of the German's, the
numbers would be over whelming. Unfortunately, my Uncle only answered a few
questions for me on his involvement before his passing. He was on the USS
Emmons, A Benson Class destroyer.
Although he duty station was in the engine room, he impressed upon
me that they did get above deck to a view unlike anything he had seen.
Thousands of Ships of all shapes and sizes, as far as the eye could see in
every direction. I don't think a graphic can quite capture the sight of
such an armada, not to mention the airpower overhead.
He also stated that the Captain kept that tin can parallel to the
beaches as close in as the depth allowed so they could keep the shelling
pressure on the cliffs above.
My Uncle was released after Germany had surrendered. The USS Emmons
went on to do pick it and mine detection duty in the Pacific. Its career
was
ended by 5 Kamikazi's off the coast of Okinawa on April 6, 1945.

Anyone interested in the duty stations and activities of the USS
Emmons can find its saga in print form, ISBN 0-595-36299-0
