Here is what I can add to this conversation:
I have a restricted publication entitled: Signal Communication in Infantry
and Airborne Infantry Cambat Teams, dated 1 December 1950, and used by the
The Infantry School at Ft. Benning.
It details radio nets for various regiments, etc.with both existing
equipment and 'replacement' equipment (PRC-6, GRC-3, 5, & 7, VRC-7, and
PRC-10).
It says that TM numbers are not available. Also, all of the sketches and
photographs are different to a greater or lesser degree than what issued
equipment looked like. The GRC radios look like mockups. The VRC-7 picture
looks like a prototype. The PRC-6 looks fairly close to what issued
equipment was to be. From notes in the booklet, I would say the new
equipment was documented for 'reference only' and all the education was with
the old equpment.
By the way, in reference to the VRC-12 and its early nomenclature. I believe
that it may have been assigned in the early fifties for the developtment of
this radio. Years ago I had a prototype of the VRC-12 which was produced in
Canada, labeled VRC-12. It used the same modules found the the CPRC-26. I
sold it, much to my regret today.
