Well, we know that the GRC-9 was used for Naval Gunfire Support in Korea,
probably extensively. This photo is official USMC and it does not look
staged to me but I agree, many similar ones are staged. (Code talkers in
the S. Pacific for example. especially night - flash photography in the
jungle....! )
The accompanying text for that photo is as-quoted. They are a USMC
Tactical Air Control Party. Possibly with a C-47 or maybe a 119 as an
airborne command post? B-29? I believe ARC-8's were around on HF AM in
those A/C well into the 1950's....This battle was in 1950.
You're right - not an M-1 cleaning rod, wrong handle! .... Is that snow
or flame in the background?
Merrills Marauders in the WWII Pac used HF extensively to coordinate air
support, especially logistics support for airdrops so I wouldn't count that
out entirely. SCR-284's and SCR-536's, pretty much all they had.
