Thanks for the info on the charger model. Now I know what to search for on that www thing.
Regarding a stiff power supply for testing, I did in fact have a pretty good 12 V, 12 AH gelcell connected right at the battery contacts in the back of the chassis. I had originally thought that the sound was low DC, but as I said, it disappeared when I disconnected the speaker/mike and listened to the unsquelched noise of the rx.
I just sent in payment for a shop manual for this radio from that www place. I'll see if this type of symptom is mentioned in there.
