As it happens, Jay, I have just finished a fairly large (50 vehicles) which
installed an ACU-1000 and three XTL-5000's in a self-contained transit case
which is mounted in a communcations van.
The radios I used were not dual-control head, but the dash-mount style. The
system functions very well. The ACU-1000 has been able, so far, to
withstand the riggors of being bounced around in the van (although the vans
don't go "off road." I do know that JPS makes a cable that interfaces
between the control head and the radio "brick" and provides the audio path
and PTT path needed by the ACU-1000. I don't know of anything that would
prevent you from using the accessory connector just as well. My vote would
be to go ahead with the project.
