[Motorola] Calif Highway Patrol MICORs

Neil (or anyone else):

Speaking of the fabled "California Highway Patrol
MICOR radios", what was the purpose of the factory
modifications done to all of those lowband radios?  

As I remember the myths I heard, it had something 
to do with being able to operate the transmitters over 
a band spread that exceeded Motorola's recommendations 
(or something like that), but I really don't know the
original purpose.  I ask because I have one of the mobiles
laying over there in that corner.

Did any of those mods ever get documented anyplace?
