GROUND!!  I had a similar experience with my High Sierra.
I assume you are using a trailer hitch mount that inserts
into a drawbar box.  Grounding of the mount is paramount.
Short as possible heavy ground from the antenna base to
the vehicle's chassis that does't rely only on the physical
contact for its electrical contact.

VSWR on my 14-month old Tarheel 100 has changed. The antenna is mounted on a 
Buick LeSabre using a trailer hitch mount. On 40M the tuning is VERY sharp, 
touchy and not as low as previously experienced. Before I disassemble it for 
cleaning or other mtce., I wonder if group members have encountered this 
and/or have suggestions. I've not had it apart previously. Thanks and Best
