When we compare one person's report of noise to another's perception of
relative quiet on a similar vehicle it leads me to ask, "Are we talking
about weak signal HF SSB/CW or VHF FM?" There's a major difference in what
would be acceptable in the way of ignition noise, remembering that the FM
mode is highly resistant to radiated ignition noise.
I have an HF through UHF transceiver (FT-100) in my 2000 Yukon (essentially
the same vehicle) with a Tarheel screwdriver for HF and a Diamond SG7500
for V/U FM. I have what I deem an acceptable S5-S7 ignition noise on the
mid HF bands. But I can drop this to about S-1 with the FT-100's superb
noise blanker. I have no perceptible ignition noise at all on V/UHF FM.
Randy, what rig and antenna are you using? Are you powered with at least 10
gauge wires directly to the battery? And please describe your installation.
Perhaps some of us can offer additional suggestions.
