A lot of times areas aren't open to the public to prevent damage/pilfering but if you make a contact with the ship's ham club or radio restorers they will usually welcome an interested person.
I visited the Yorktown a dozen years ago and was told all the radio gear had been stripped out - but since then, a bunch has been found and restored.

We have scheduled vacation in Charleston this fall and plan to visit. I am asking if the HF radio room is on the tour or is it possible to see?
Reason I am asking, we toured the New Jersey, in Camden NJ and was told the radio room was off limits, not on the tour, even after asking.
