A lot of times areas aren't open to the public to prevent damage/pilfering but if you make a contact with the ship's ham club or radio restorers they will usually welcome an interested person.
I visited the Yorktown a dozen years ago and was told all the radio gear had been stripped out - but since then, a bunch has been found and restored.

While on the subject of museums, has anybody visited the Yorktown in Charleston?
We have scheduled vacation in Charleston this fall and plan to visit. I am asking if the HF radio room is on the tour or is it possible to see?
Reason I am asking, we toured the New Jersey, in Camden NJ and was told the radio room was off limits, not on the tour, even after asking.
