Hi Tim
The N female connectors on mine were installed the same way with the flange mounted on the face.
I'm guessing the TCS on the Bowfin had its mod with the 239 ctrs early on as it seemed the 239 ctrs were being mostly used then and maybe later , say in the 1950's, type n ctrs became more in use. Though the 239 ctrs would work just fine at the freqs used on the TCS.

Hi Paul - Although I cannot attest to its pedigree, the TCS T/R aboard the USS Bowfin sub at Pearl Harbor each have SO-239 type panel connectors. I don't know if those are "original" or maybe Hamm-ered by a previous owner who may have donated them to the boat. Bowfin TCS installation photo here - about halfway down the page: http://www.n6cc.com/tcs-radio-set/
Also note that "they" got the antenna and receiver cables reversed as they are connected to the transmitter...I did not get a photo of any associated "tuner" aboard at the time.

30 years ago I acquired a TCS pair xmtr and rcvr that had type N ctrs on them. I commentated to the seller what a nice job he had done on the ctr mod and he told me that is how his father , a ham, had 'procured' them from a ship that was getting retrofitted at the Mare Island Naval base where he worked. So it looks like the Navy had done the mod with the N ctrs and they did a very nice job.

This discussion brings up a question. Is there information available on the web on what I assume to be an N connector field change to the TCS? I encountered several TCS sets aboard U S Navy ships while in the service with this modification. Wondering if there were other changes done internally to the units or perhaps these were units only to be used with the TN-233/SRC Transmission Line Tuner?

I do not recall Mike as I built this about 25 or more years ago. I have used it from 160 through 40 with no problems. I used Jerry Sevick’s book as a reference. Another nice advantage is that one can now use a 50 ohm power meter like a Bird thruline to measure power. 73 – Mike

Mike,
Which cores did you use for your RF Transformer?

Hi Dave –
I have mentioned this previously several times. My preferred method was to use a 4 to one RF transformer. A UNUN where the 1 goes to the set and the 4 goes to the resonant antenna. This has worked for me just fine on the TCS, the BC-474 and the WS-19. I am sure it will work with a lot of others as well. 73 – Mike
