My friend John AA7W who has restored and used both BC-611 and DAV asked me for a photo when I described this toy to him.
This is the 'Ultimate Soldier Walkie Talkie", sold in a display box of two, and usually overpriced for what it is. It is about ¾ size
- 12 inch ruler shown, plastic construction, works on CB 27 MHz band. There is actually no pull - out antenna; it works on this
antenna stub underneath the antenna cover, and I presume some length of wire inside. My original silly idea was to add a
telescopic antenna. I think I actually came up with a couple reasonable facsimiles, still shiny, but at least with a plastic top cap.
I would have to drill out a hole for it and then probably add some kind
of grommet around this pull - out antenna. At one time, the height of my silliness was to imagine putting a 3885 kHz transceiver
inside. A superregen circuit is terribly unselective but I was thinking I would maybe put a passive selective stage before the
detector using a 3885 quartz. Oh well. The bottom door has a marking "DO NOT OPEN" but I forced it open carefully without damage,
but - it goes nowhere, just the bottom of the case proper.
I kind of realized I have better things to do but I at least wanted to see what kind of circuit the set uses, and maybe draw it
out if not too difficult. But I didn't see any direct way into it. My curiosity is demanding enough that I won't be terribly bothered
if this effort cosmetically damages the thing - I have to know. I saw on one side 6 what looked like round seals. I removed these
and they got kind of chewed up in the process. Now I need to find a long narrow stem screwdriver and figure out what screw
head is used at the end of the shafts. But it looks more complicated than just that. Even if the two halves of the case come
apart - you can see in the photo the vertical seam - the microphone - headphone caps are glued on, as is the "nameplate",
all of which items "share" both halves of the case. My electronics hobby activities nowadays have to be limited to "playground
recess time" and then it's back to work on more serious priorities. This looked like a can of problems so it's going back into
the box until some later time when I attack it again.
Of course you all have seen the "What Price Glory" ( company name ) metal reproduction BC-611 that are metal construction
and painstakingly accurate in detail. These are aimed for the reenactor community and are empty inside for installation of some
FRS type VHF FM radio.
