1.5 inches would be around 2 pfd. When I needed that, I used about 3/4" of wire and it 
made a huge difference.

I found that to be true also. I used #12 THHN wire so it would be stiff enough to not vibrate.

Well, you should take a close look at Icom stuff sometime. Some of what they do amazes 
me at how poorly it is done.
