Those who bring up the "too much feedback" issue are correct to worry about that, 
especially with modern crystals.

What I did was to use a small light bulb in series with one leg of the crystal and kept cutting 
back the pair of wires that made up the capacitor until the bulb no longer lit at all. I can't 
remember the type of bulb at this late date.

Also, Ray, instead of building a complete oscillator and using the 12A6 as the buffer, you 
might consider using those small crystal-substitutes that Dave Stinson told us about.

I think using one of those would aleviate your problem with crystals.
