Hi Mike,
I have an MN-26C Bendix receiver running and have listened for NDBs as
well as European long wave broadcasts. I just plug it into a beverage
antenna and hear literally hundreds of NDBs. There are a few power
houses, one of them being a 1 KW station in the Cayman Islands. It is
loud at night. I hear a 25 watt station from Nova Scotia a few hundred
miles away during the day, so you can get a feel for the positive
effects of salt water!! A 1 KW NDB in Montreal is closer but is weak
during the day.
The problem with beverages is that they take up waaay too much room!
Many people have luck with ferrite rod antennas. a group of long ferrite
rods bundled with many turns of wire wrapped around it can be very
effective and is small and rotatable. I never made one, but those who
have swear by them for LF reception.
I have a good friend in Fredericksburg, actually Chancellorsville. I
visit there every spring.

I also use an old Bendix RA-10 RX on 150-400 kHz. It works great too.
