Concerning NDBs: one of my refurbished BC-453s, coupled to my ham-band wire antenna
(when it is untuned), has "heard" NDBs from as far away as 2500 miles at night: that one in
Northwestern Canada in the Yukon Territory.
I have also routinely heard many other NDBs, some in California, Washington, Nevada, and
in the eastern U.S. The BIG problem with LF and VLF listening is noise.
I am somewhat surprised that Mike's RAK has only heard an NDB 85 miles away.
The RAK is an excellent VLF receiver, but it doesn't reach ELF. Stops at about 14 kHz.
RBA, with a later factory mod, will reach 10 kHz, but that is still way above ELF. The
SP-600-VLF also tunes down to 10 kHz.
I have at least one Stoddart "noise meter" here which tunes to 20 Hz. Now THAT is ELF.
