One NWVRS member in a recent discussion cited radio law prohibiting spark transmitters. I am reading a book, "On The Edge of War", by a USCG radioman,
George C. Larson. This book is a fun read.
He mentions shortly after Pearl Harbor attack, a weak spark signal was heard. The shore stations were puzzled, but it turned out to be a Greek steamer,
a tramp freighter, trying with limited language ability, only able to communicate via "Q" signals, asking whether he could proceed to Honolulu.
I also recalled a U.S. publication, 1941 edition, "Radio Aids to Navigation", which lists a couple "B wave" emission stations in the USSR. B waves means
"damped waves" means spark.
