Ok, roll back the clock 50+ years and go to a typical hamfest. Piles and piles of
military gear with us young sprouts grabbing this and that. All the “old guys” mumbling
about “why would you need a fifth one of those?”. 

You are looking at the same thing, just from the other end of the process.
