I don't think the comparison is apt today. The BC-746 plug-ins still retain their integrity, and can be kept to enhance operability or even just display of the SCR-511
set.

It seems to me that we have been through all of this before with numerous articles in the various ham and electronics magazines on conversion of the BC-746 tuning unit of the BC-745 "Pogo Stick" transceiver to a 1-tube, crystal-controlled QRP transmitter. The last one I remember was by Dave, WA6VVL in a back issue of Electric Radio.
These BC-746 units used to be available, dirt cheap, from mail order firms such as Lafayette and Burstein Applebee.
