The “Keep ‘em barefoot and out of the radio room” conspiracy seems unlikely
to me too.
My reading is that practically all of the WW2 British Y Service CW
intercept operators were women (WRENS). Same thing for the Canadian Navy
intercept operators (some interesting stories on Jerry Proc’s great site).
I don’t know about US forces other than Pacific region intercept stations
which were USN enlisted men.
Coil storage was no problem. RAS tabletop racks have ps, rcvr, coil
storage, speaker.
HRO/RAS were used shipboard too
