Hue> Ah... does not have to be rare to be cool!
I imagine around port towns they are more of them than in the desert of
Arizona!
This is the only one I had a chance to get? Had it for years...

Trying to use it must have indeed been a challenge. Initially I grabbed
it as it was another crystal set to go with my earlier ones. Never did
try it. Now I may have to just to see how horrible the setup is. Years
back i did play with the IP-500 with a triple detector.

I DO NEED A BUZZER COVER FOR OUR IP-500! Help?

Do you mean the Mackay 123 ? If so – that is not particularly rare. They
maybe were easy to grab out of the console when the rest went to scrap or
whatever.
They don't date back to the heyday, altho the IP-501 was certainly still
in service when the 123 appeared. I think by the schematics I have seen, the
123 dates
to 1937, IIRC. There is a suffix on the 123 like 123B or 123BX and I
don't know what the X means and the manuals don't say either, unless maybe it's
some kind
of date code for the set being installed in an updated console?
You have to wonder how the crystal set could be used. Your ship's power is
out, so your console is down, and the battery powered 2nd receiver, the
emergency
LF receiver, is also not working? So you get on your crystal radio, making
sure the catwhisker is on a hot spot, and tune it up? So the urgent
message you pick up
says, "Hey, you better get your ass off that tub and now!" ???
