It's probably not too bad as a crystal radio. The same basic circuit is used in Heath's CR-1 crystal radio,
I mean, a series tuned primary circuit, transformer coupled to a parallel tuned circuit to the diode.
The Heath circuit works quite well. This circuit works well with electrically short antennas.  
The 123B has one of the longest instruction manuals around - oops, I meant "shortest instruction manuals".

I imagine around  port towns they are more of them than in the desert of Arizona!
This is the only  one I had a chance  to get?  Had it  for years...
Trying to use it must have indeed  been a challenge. Initially  I  grabbed it as it was another  crystal set to go with my earlier ones. Never  did  try it. Now  I may have to  just  to see how horrible the setup is.   Years  back i did  play  with the IP-500  with a triple   detector.
 
I DO NEED A BUZZER COVER  FOR   OUR  IP-500! Help?
