Click on the link on this page to see comprehensive information, diagrams etc of all VE models. [VE301 incidentally stands for Volksempfänger 30.1. (add 1933), the date of the Nazi "Machtergreifung" (govm't takeover) in January 1933.] The whole program was propaganda, the DKE38 (year it first was launched, not "was manufactured", they were produced to the end of the war - some without the Swastika for export...) was the last and cheapest variant. There were changes along the production years and initially also a battery powered version. Lack of raw materials also was an important consideration: e.g. no metal chassis. The two tubes were incidentally designed specifically just for this radio: VY2 rectifier and VCL11 triode-power pentode.
