I bought this standard SCR-AN-183 / 283 manual, date 1940, for $5. I thought, "Not bad", but only after a month did I look inside and discover to my surprise
a scotch-taped in, insert of 7 pages, titled "Coil Set C-184 for use with......". So, "Not bad at all".
I also bought 2 manuals of BC-191. At the PSARA swapmeet, a little later, I greeted at my van a Seattle area jeep person, Phil, and in talking with him, I learned
he was now interested in getting a BC-191 or -375. This vehicle guy is sharp. He has already in a space of a couple years repaired and got working three BC-654.
Anyway when I heard he was interested in the BC-191/ 375, out of my abundance I handed him one of my BC-191 manuals. So, maybe with my providential
find of the C-184 manualette, it occurred to me, maybe this was a case of "pre-instant karma". Or something like that; something like stoking the flywheel of
good fortune.
I was surprised to read that the C-184 has an inductance in series with the crystal to limit the crystal current. I am puzzled why coil and why not simply
resistance, which seems to work also, as in the pilot lamp in series with the crystal. Of course in a military application, maybe the light bulb would present
another possible failure mode. But why not resistor ?
I can scan the 7 pages but it may be a little while. I brought back a bunch of my own stuff to sort and dispose, as well as items I'd found and promised people;
and several totes of ham radio equipment from an estate of an old friend, which I need to sort and then Ebay. I need to go back up to Seattle area in a couple
weeks and complete the shed roof before the monsoon season starts, and then also grab some more stuff.
Ah, "stuff", such fun to paw thru and rediscover, and also a curse and burden.
