I've never had an SX-88, but have never been overly impressed with
Hallicrafter receivers. The SX-28 is/was probably the best of Halligans
products and I used one back in the late 1950s as a novice. Not much fun to
work on though.
Another (in my opinion) overrated and over priced receiver is the TMC
GPR-90. Extremely well built, but lacking in performance. I ran one beside
my NC-183D and convinced myself that the NC-183D was much better performer.
Everyone has their preferences though. I much prefer the R-388 to the R-390
and 390A; but will admid that the R-390 out performs the R-388.
